Comparing classic motorbike insurance
For thousands of classic bikers in the UK, riding a motorcycle is nothing less than a way of life. Whether your classic bike is a 70’s vintage or an 80’s Japanese favourite, we bet you love life on two wheels. That’s when you’re not googling bike parts or tinkering in the garage, of course.
And we expect that a real highlight for you as a classic motorbike owner is that you get to buy motorbike insurance! OK, maybe not. But insurance is a must if you want to take your classic on the road.
Comparing bike insurance
There are a lot of insurance companies in the market, so it can be hard to know where to look for a good value policy. That’s why compare themarket .com offers motorcycle insurance comparison, to help you find a quote that’s right for you. Take note, though, that we can only compare cover for bikes built since 1970.
Just complete our form and you’ll get a list of bike insurance quotes. We’ll ask your name, address and the registration of your bike. If you haven’t bought the bike yet or don’t know the reg you’ll still need to enter some details to get a quote, so select the type of bike manually using our lists.
Next we’ll ask you about your marital status, job and your riding history – your licence type and how long you’ve been riding.
Details about your classic bike
The next page asks about your bike (we can fetch quotes for any bike manufactured during or after 1970). Bear in mind that a number of things can help you reduce your premium, such as fitting a security device to your bike or parking it in a locked garage.
Next we’ll ask few questions about what kind of bike insurance you need, and then you’ll see a list of motorcycle quotes for you and your classic bike.
The cheapest bike insurance quotes are shown at the top as we list them out in price order. The cost shown is the total annual price, but if you’d rather pay in monthly instalments these prices can be shown too. The table shows you which features are included in each policy.
We show the most popular features in the grid. If breakdown cover is included, you’ll be able to call for roadside assistance if you have bike break down. With a classic bike this could be worth considering, unless you don’t travel far or you have a friend with a pickup truck!
Motor legal protection is designed to help if you need to recover uninsured losses following an accident. For example if you are injured and unable to work due to an accident that wasn’t your fault. It couldalso help if you need to pay legal costs if someone makes a claim against you for an accident you caused.
You may want to protect your no claims discount so that you can still keep it even if you make a claim.
Another optional feature is personal accident cover, which could pay a lump sum if you’re injured in an accident. Make sure to check the maximum limit for this cover.
You might also want to insure your bike helmet and leathers, as these can be expensive to replace. Some policies include helmet and leathers cover, others offer this as an add-on. Great if you damage your riding gear as a result of an accident.
Still too much?
If the bike insurance prices are higher than you were hoping, there are a few things you could try. First, if you put in a higher voluntary excess in the box at the top of the page, this should bring each bike insurance quote down. It means that you might get a cheaper policy, but just make sure you can afford the excess if you do need to make a claim.
If not, you could look at third party, fire and theft policies. Some providers may offer this, but some may not depending on the value of your bike. Again you just need to adjust the options in the box at the top of the page. Third party cover can be cheaper than fully comprehensive, but remember, these policies only cover the cost of damage to other people and property, not your own bike. This might be more appealing if your bike isn’t very valuable, but if the difference between this cover and comprehensive insurance is small, remember that you could get better protection with comprehensive.
